Villamayor de Treviño
Village
Villamayor de Treviño is a municipality of 59 inhabitants in the province of Burgos, in the Odra-Pisuerga district, situated beside the Odra river, documented since 1092, when Nuño Ansúrez donated his estates to Burgos Cathedral. Its name reflects a Celtic origin meaning triple boundary marker, since the area was a meeting point of three pre-Roman peoples: the Cantabri, the Vaccaei and the Turmogi. It preserves a Roman bridge over the Arroyo Mayor and remains of a Roman villa at the campo de Santillana. At the centre of the village stands the church of Santa María, with an altarpiece in its main nave; of its former Premonstratensian convent of San Miguel only the doorway and part of the wall remain.
