Villegas
Village
Villegas is a municipality in the comarca of Brullés, within Odra-Pisuerga (Burgos), with 83 inhabitants divided between Villegas and its hamlet of Villamorón. Both settlements were born around the year 880, when Asturian families led by Egas and Mauronta settled on the banks of the Brullés river, a league south of the newly founded Villadiego: Villa Egas gave rise to Villegas and Villa Mauronta to Villamorón. It was a behetría of Count Nuño Pérez de Lara, regent of the Kingdom between 1164 and 1170, and the two settlements merged around 1580 into a single town, which lost its seigneurial status when declared crown land (realengo) in 1752. Its church of Santa Eugenia, with three naves with star-ribbed vaults and an Isabelline choir, holds a main altarpiece attributed to Domingo de Amberes and another, Flemish, from the 15th century.
