Sordillos
Village
Sordillos is a hamlet in the Odra-Pisuerga district, in the province of Burgos, situated halfway between Villadiego and Melgar de Fernamental, with 23 inhabitants, which also includes the settlement of Mahallos. It was a lordship of the duke of Frías, within the Cuadrilla de Odra, and is already documented in 1144, in a donation to the monastery of Oña; in 1166 the monastery of San Pablo was founded there, for Premonstratensian nuns. The area, already settled in Roman times by the Turmogi, was crossed by the road linking Hispania with Gaul, and tradition places here the passage of the emperor Augustus during his campaign against the Cantabri of Peña Amaya. Its church of San Pedro Apóstol, late Romanesque of the 13th century, is crowned by a slender two-tier bell-gable with bell openings.
