Isar
Village
Isar is a municipality of 279 inhabitants in the Odra-Pisuerga district, in the province of Burgos, situated beside the Hormazuelas river, a tributary of the Arlanzón, and also includes the settlements of Palacios de Benaver, Cañizar de Argaño and Villorejo. Its name derives from yessar, land rich in gypsum ore that was once worked there. It is already recorded in a 1068 charter of King Sancho II for restoring the see of Oca, and in the 13th century it was called Cámara de los Manriques, after the tower where this family habitually resided. During the Late Middle Ages and the Old Regime it formed part of the extensive lordships of the marquises of Aguilar de Campoo.
