Hornillos del Camino
Village
Hornillos del Camino is a hamlet on the Arlanzón, in the province of Burgos, with 44 inhabitants, located on the French Way of St James. Documented since the 9th century as part of a defensive line of towers of early Castile, it was called Forniellos after the tile kilns that once stood there, and came to have three pilgrims' hospitals, now gone: that of San Lázaro, for lepers and pilgrims, that of the Santo Espíritu, and a third. In 1936 Visigothic tombs appeared, containing pottery and valuable metalwork. Its church, dedicated to San Román, stands, restored, on the square. In late July it celebrates the Fiesta del Gallo, born of a Peninsular War legend about French soldiers who stole the village's hens.
The Rooster Festival
Activity
A monolith recalls this celebration of the end of July, born according to local tradition of the episode in which the French soldiers of the Peninsular War took away all the village's hens.
The church of San Román
Monument
The parish church presides over the single street of this village of forty households through which the Camino Francés passes. It preserves ribbed vaults, a baptismal font and an altarpiece, and in 1836 Visigothic tombs with pottery and metals appeared nearby.
