Tardajos
Village
Tardajos is a town in the Alfoz de Burgos district, situated 10 kilometres west of the capital, downstream on the river Arlanzón, at the point where it meets the Úrbel, and on the route of the French Way of the Camino de Santiago. Heir to the ancient Roman Deobrígula, it preserves on the El Castro plateau, at 915 metres, a site declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1994. Its urban layout, of medieval origin, remains recognisable despite recent growth to the south and west of the centre. The church of the Assumption combines a medieval tower, Gothic naves and Baroque finials. With 862 inhabitants, it has a continental climate of warm summers and cold winters, somewhat tempered by its position on a hillside, sheltered from the northwest winds.
