What to see and do in Valle de Valdebezana

Valle de Valdebezana
Village
Valle de Valdebezana is a municipality of the Merindades, in the province of Burgos, in the west of the comarca, with its town hall at Soncillo and nineteen minor local entities spread over 156.60 km² of mountains and meadows; it has about 480 inhabitants. Within its boundaries lie the Ebro reservoir and part of the Hoces del Alto Ebro y Rudrón natural park, in the Valle de Arreba, with mountains of beech and oak among which the Las Palancas gorge and the Las Pisas waterfall stand out. The relief, already part of the Cantabrian Mountains, reaches 1,194 metres at the Cielma peak, while Soncillo stands at 845 metres. Its livestock farming maintains the breeding of the hispano-bretón horse, in a territory crossed by the road linking Burgos with Santander via the Escudo pass.
Gorge of Las Palancas
Nature
A spectacular gorge opened in the limestone that, together with the falls of Las Pisas, forms the finest landscape of the municipality; part of the valley of Arreba also lies within the natural park of the Hoces del Alto Ebro y Rudrón.
Castle of Virtus
Monument
Virtus Castle, also called the castle of the Porras or Porres family, stands in the village of Virtus, in the province of Burgos, part of the municipality of Valle de Valdebezana. It received generic protection, along with the rest of Spain's castles, under a decree of 22 April 1949, and today holds the status of Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection). It thus watches over one of the nineteen villages of a municipality set in a territory with a Cantabrian presence documented since the Iron Age, whose mountains once supplied timber to the Real Fábrica de La Cavada.
