What to see and do in Valle de Zamanzas

Valle de Zamanzas
Village
Valle de Zamanzas is a municipality of barely 46 inhabitants in the Las Merindades comarca, in the province of Burgos, with its seat at Gallejones and made up of six small seigneurial settlements: Aylanes, Barrio la Cuesta, Báscones, Gallejones, Robredo and Villanueva Rampalay. It was a valley of the Bastón de Laredo, under the jurisdiction of the marquisate of Cilleruelo in the hands of the Duke of Frías, who appointed its pedáneo councillors. The origin of these villages, on the old boundaries of the alfoces of Arreba and Siero, is obscure; names such as Aylanes or Gallejones suggest they may have been settled by foramontanos who came from Asturias, while Báscones would point to Vasconic resettlers. The valley's own name appears in the 14th-century Becerro de las Behetrías as “Valde Sant Manças”.
The narrow valley of Zamanzas
Curiosity
Six villages share the abrupt slopes of this valley of nineteen square kilometres; place names such as Ailanes or Gallejones point to a resettlement by foramontanos who came from the mountains of the north.
