What to see and do in Merindad de Valdeporres

Merindad de Valdeporres
Village
Merindad de Valdeporres is a municipality in the Las Merindades comarca, in the north of the province of Burgos, with its capital at Pedrosa de Valdeporres and 412 inhabitants across fourteen hamlets. It stretches along the valley of the Nela and Engaña rivers, deep in the Cantabrian Mountains; the Nela rises within the municipality, near Cantabria. It preserves prehistoric remains such as the dolmen of Ahedo de las Pueblas, and in the Middle Ages it formed part, together with Dosante and Cidad de Valdeporres, of the jurisdiction of the Porres, which according to legend took its name from a knight who won a battle with a club after breaking his lance and sword. It preserves the 14th-century Gothic tower of Cidad, the Velasco family house at San Martín de Porres and the mouth of the almost seven-kilometre La Engaña tunnel.
Tunnel of La Engaña
Curiosity
Almost seven kilometres of railway tunnel bored beneath the hills of El Somo for a train between Santander and the Mediterranean that never ran; the Trespaderne-Cidad line operated from 1930 and closed in 1985.
Fortified house of Puentedey
Monument
A fortified palace of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries that presides over the houses of Puentedey, a hamlet perched on the rock arch that the river Nela bored beneath the village and that gave it its name.
