What to see and do in Alfoz de Santa Gadea

Alfoz de Santa Gadea
Village
Alfoz de Santa Gadea is a municipality of the Las Merindades comarca, in the judicial district of Villarcayo, with its seat at Santa Gadea de Alfoz, accompanied by Higón and Quintanilla de Santa Gadea; it totals about a hundred inhabitants. It was part of the Bastón de Laredo under the seigneury of the Marquis of Aguilar, and also included the settlement of Arija, which split off as its own municipality in 1930. Today it lives mainly off livestock farming: together with the neighbouring municipalities of Valle de Valdebezana and Arija it promotes the breeding of the hispano-bretón foal, a native breed with a herd of 800 mares in the province of Burgos. In Quintanilla de Santa Gadea a craft workshop of saddlery and leatherwork is still kept.

Curiosity
In Quintanilla a workshop of artisan leatherwork is kept up, one of the few productive activities of a municipality of three villages and a hundred inhabitants from which Arija separated in 1930.
