What to see and do in Valle de Manzanedo

Valle de Manzanedo
Village
Valle de Manzanedo is a municipality of 115 inhabitants located in the upper Ebro, in the Las Merindades comarca, between the Leva anticline and the sierra de Tudanca, with abundant forests of oaks, beeches, maples and other species. It groups together fifteen population centres, among them Rioseco, Cidad de Ebro and Manzanedo, the municipal capital at 619 metres. It reached 1,388 inhabitants in the 1940s, compared with 703 in 1843. Its main heritage landmark is the Cistercian monastery of Santa María de Rioseco, abandoned after Mendizábal's disentailment and today in ruins beside a meander of the Ebro. The municipality is also home to the El Canto wind farm, with 23 turbines and a total capacity of 15,180 kW.
Monastery of Santa María de Rioseco
Monument
The Monastery of Santa María de Rioseco stands on the banks of the Ebro, in the Valle de Manzanedo, next to the Hoces del Alto Ebro y Rudrón nature park, 10 kilometres from Villarcayo. A Cistercian monastery founded at Quintanajuar and moved several times before settling at Rioseco in 1236, it came to hold lordship over a large part of northern Burgos, and in its best days housed around a hundred people, monks, lay brothers and servants, with a guesthouse and hospital for pilgrims and the poor. Now abandoned, it is being restored by volunteers thanks to the Salvemos Rioseco collective, which secured its removal from the Red List of endangered heritage in 2018; in 2019 it was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection). Beside it survives the hermitage of Argés, older than the monastery itself.
Oak groves, beech forests and yews of the Ebro
Nature
Between the 590 metres of the bank of the Ebro and the 1,210 of the south-east, the valley preserves stands of oak, beech, maple and yew in a municipality that has lost ninety per cent of its residents since 1940.
