What to see and do in Valdeporres

Valdeporres
Village
Valdeporres is the valley of northern Burgos followed by the río Nela, in the Las Merindades comarca, which gives its name to the Merindad de Valdeporres, with 412 inhabitants and its capital at Pedrosa de Valdeporres, 95 km from Burgos. It brings together villages such as Puentedey, built on a rock arch hollowed out by the water, Brizuela and San Martín de Porres. The río Nela rises within the municipality itself, near the puerto de la Matanela, the boundary with Cantabria, and descends hemmed in between the Montes del Somo before gathering the waters of the río Engaña. Its territory holds prehistoric remains, such as the dolmen of Ahedo de las Pueblas and the cromlech of Robredo de las Pueblas, and it formed part of the seven original Merindades de Castilla la Vieja.

Nature
The Nela rises in the montes do Somo, within the municipal area of the Merindad de Valdeporres, and runs for 75 kilometres before flowing into the Ebro near Trespaderne, after passing through Puentedey, where it has bored through the rock arch on which the village sits. Its flow mainly supplies the towns of Villarcayo, Medina de Pomar and their hamlets. Two stretches of the river, together with stretches of the Trema and Salón rivers and several tributary streams, form a 679-hectare Site of Community Importance at the northern edge of the province of Burgos, which includes the valley of the río de la Gándara, with a series of stepped waterfalls known as Las Pisas. Its wildlife includes the kingfisher, the Pyrenean desman and the otter.
