What to see and do in Villarcayo de Merindad de Castilla la Vieja

Villarcayo de Merindad de Castilla la Vieja
Village
Villarcayo de Merindad de Castilla la Vieja is a municipality of the province of Burgos and capital of the Las Merindades comarca, in a flat area bounded to the south by the río Ebro and the sierra de la Tesla and to the north by the Cordillera Cantábrica. Its name may come from Villa de Arcadio, a Hispano-Roman personal name, and it is already documented in 959 as Fonte Arcayo in a donation recorded in the Cartulario de Cardeña. Its main centre is notable for the plaza Mayor and the church of Santa Marina. A town of some 4,100 inhabitants crossed by the río Nela, its old town was declared a historic ensemble in 2007 and it holds a Monday market by a privilege granted in 1571; among its hamlets, the Romanesque churches of Torme and Escaño stand out.
Monastery of Santa María la Real de Vileña
Monument
A women's monastery that preserves Gothic tombs and a notable ensemble of religious images and altarpieces, in one of the twenty-six local entities that make up the head municipality of the Merindades.
Chorizo of Villarcayo
Food and drink
The villa has a pork-butchery fame of its own within a province dominated by black pudding: its chorizo, alongside the fresh cheese and the honey of the hills of the Nela, heads the larder of the comarca.
