What to see and do in Villanueva de Teba

Villanueva de Teba
Village
Villanueva de Teba is a municipality in the east of the province of Burgos, in the traditional district of La Bureba and the judicial district of Miranda de Ebro, which includes the depopulated hamlet of Ventosa and has around fifty inhabitants. It arose towards the end of the 9th century, when the first count of Castile, don Rodrigo, and later his son Diego, secured the frontier with strongholds such as Pancorbo, Burgos and Belorado; it is first documented in the year 957, when Abbot Adolfo incorporated its properties in the area into the Monastery of San Mamés, in the Montes Obarenes. It covers 6.12 square kilometres ranging from 650 to 1,050 metres above sea level, with the town centre at 725 metres, between the first foothills of the Montes Obarenes and the valley of the río Oroncillo.
Church of San Pedro Apóstol
Monument
Parish church of the municipality, dedicated to San Pedro Apóstol, who gives his name to the patron of the town. It occupies the centre of the village and around it turns the big festival of 29 June, the most notable of the local calendar along with that of San Roque.
Hermitage of San Roque
Monument
Rural hermitage dedicated to San Roque, a saint traditionally invoked against the plague and very widespread in the villages of La Bureba. It is the second religious reference point of the municipality and the setting of the celebration of 16 August.
Foothills of the Montes Obarenes
Nature
The municipal district unfolds from the first elevations of the Montes Obarenes, in the sierra de Pancorbo, to the valley of the river Oroncillo. That difference in height of four hundred metres combines slopes of scrub and Portuguese oak with the farmland of the valley floor.
Festivities of San Pedro y San Roque
Activity
The festive calendar is spread over three dates: San Isidro on 15 May, San Pedro and San Pablo on 29 June, which is usually moved to the following weekend, and San Roque on 16 August. The last two concentrate the social life of the town in summer.
The necropolis of warriors
Nature
In the municipal district one of the most studied Iron Age necropolises of La Bureba was excavated, alongside that of Miraveche. It brings together only some thirty-five graves, but a striking proportion contained weaponry: dagger, shield, spearhead and knife.
From Villanueva del Conde to Villanueva de Teba
Historical milestone
The town is documented for the first time in 957, within the territory of Pancorbo, and in 1058 it already figures as Villanueva del Conde. With that name it lasted until 1916, the year in which the municipality came to be called officially Villanueva de Teba.
Roast milk-fed lamb
Food and drink
La Bureba is one of the Burgos comarcas where the best lambs have traditionally been raised, and milk-fed lamb roasted in a wood-fired oven is its festival dish. It is accompanied by other provincial classics such as rice and onion blood sausage or olla podrida.
