Santa María Ribarredonda
Village
Santa María Ribarredonda is a municipality of 97 inhabitants in La Bureba, province of Burgos, crossed by the Oroncillo river. It arose around the year 882, during the same resettlement that raised the castles of Pancorbo, Burgos and Castrogeriz, and was then called simply Ribarredonda. It added Santa María to its name in the 16th century, with the construction of the church of the same name, begun in 1518 and completed in 1583 by the master builder Répide. It gave its name to one of the seven cuadrillas into which the Merindad de Bureba was divided. Written with a v since the 19th century, in 2023 a popular initiative by the town council succeeded in recovering the historic form with b, Ribarredonda.
