What to see and do in Encío

Encío
Village
Encío is a municipality of barely 37 inhabitants in the Valle del Ebro comarca, province of Burgos, which also brings together the settlements of Moriana and Obarenes. Its church of San Cosme y San Damián, Romanesque in style and dated to the 12th and 13th centuries, was declared Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1983; in 2005 the Junta de Castilla y León allocated 74,455 euros to restore its wall paintings and roof, and it now appears on Hispania Nostra's Red List of endangered heritage. The territory also holds the ruins of the Benedictine monastery of Santa María la Imperial, founded by Alfonso VII in the 12th century on an old hermitage, to which he gave the title of Imperial; a fire in 1781 destroyed almost the entire complex, which is likewise included in Hispania Nostra's Red List.
Church of San Cosme y San Damián de Encío
Monument
The church of San Cosme y San Damián, a Romanesque temple of the 12th and 13th centuries in the diocese of Burgos, presides over this village in the Ebro region, which today has fewer than forty residents. Declared a monumento histórico-artístico (a category of Spanish heritage protection) in 1983, at the start of the 21st century it was in a state of abandonment and pillage, with the apse at risk of collapse and a large crack in the wall of the chancel; in 2005 the Junta de Castilla y León allocated 74,455 euros to restore its wall paintings and repair the roof. Notable features include the apse with corbels and a trefoil-arched window, and a doorway that has lost its archivolts; inside it preserves deteriorated wall paintings and heraldic coats of arms, perhaps belonging to the Encío or López de Encío family. It appears on the Red List of endangered heritage of Hispania Nostra.
Ruins of the monastery of Santa María la Imperial
Curiosity
Founded by Alfonso VII in the 12th century on the site of an old hermitage dedicated to the saints Lorenzo, Mamés, Justo y Pastor and Caprasio, and rebuilt in 1151 under the invocation of Santa María la Imperial, it was devastated by a fire in 1781; although it was restored, the monastic community abandoned it for good in 1835. Today it appears among the endangered monuments on the Red List of Spanish heritage, its structure on the verge of collapse, in the hamlet of Obarenes, within the municipal boundary of Encío, in the Montes Obarenes.
Fire at the monastery of Encío
Historical milestone
The fire that destroyed the monastery of Santa María la Imperial in 1781 marked the beginning of the end of a twelfth-century royal foundation, which never recovered its fabric and ended up abandoned after the disentailments.
Moriana and Obarenes, the hamlets of Encío
Curiosity
Besides the main settlement, the municipality gathers the tiny centres of Moriana and Obarenes, spread over a little under nineteen square kilometres of hillsides where the houses climb almost to the top of a conical hill.
