What to see and do in Ameyugo

Ameyugo
Village
Ameyugo is a municipality in the Valle del Ebro comarca, in the province of Burgos, with 107 inhabitants, located at the exit of the desfiladero de Pancorbo, in the narrow valley traced by the río Oroncillo as it crosses the montes Obarenes, beside the N-1 and the A-1 motorway. In the 16th century, Raimundo de Tasis, postmaster general to the Emperor Charles V, established here the postal relay of Ameyugo and Miranda, then part of the Merindad de Bureba, under crown jurisdiction. Its church of Santa María de la Antigua was declared Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) on 7 November 1991. Beside the old national road stands the Monumento al Pastor, a well-known landmark on the road to Irún, which appears as the first postcard in Ringo Starr's book Postcards from the Boys, sent by his fellow Beatles.
Monument to the Shepherd of Ameyugo
Monument
Inaugurated on 30 September 1961 at the spot known as La Picota, it brings together three sculptures by Víctor de los Ríos to a design by Víctor López Morales: a seven-metre shepherd, a shepherd boy and the flock's dog, beside a chapel cut into the rock.
Church of Nuestra Señora la Antigua de Ameyugo
Monument
A sixteenth-century Renaissance church with a single nave and two side chapels and Romanesque and Gothic remains, with a doorway beneath a porch with star vaulting; badly damaged by a fire, it has been protected as a bien de interés cultural since 1991.
The Romanesque apse of Ameyugo that crossed the Atlantic
Curiosity
The Romanesque apse of a hermitage adjoining the parish church, related to that of San Nicolás el Viejo in Miranda de Ebro, was dismantled and moved to the United States, one of so many plunderings of rural Burgos heritage.
The Oroncillo at the exit of the gorge
Nature
Ameyugo lies at 555 metres of altitude on the bank of the Oroncillo, just where the river leaves the Pancorbo gorge and the valley opens out towards the Ebro between the last foothills of the Montes Obarenes.
