Church of San Cosme y San Damián de Encío Monument · Encío, Ebro, Burgos The church of San Cosme y San Damián, a Romanesque temple of the 12th and 13th centuries in the diocese of Burgos, presides over this village in the Ebro region, which today has fewer than forty residents. Declared a monumento histórico-artístico (a category of Spanish heritage protection) in 1983, at the start of the 21st century it was in a state of abandonment and pillage, with the apse at risk of collapse and a large crack in the wall of the chancel; in 2005 the Junta de Castilla y León allocated 74,455 euros to restore its wall paintings and repair the roof. Notable features include the apse with corbels and a trefoil-arched window, and a doorway that has lost its archivolts; inside it preserves deteriorated wall paintings and heraldic coats of arms, perhaps belonging to the Encío or López de Encío family. It appears on the Red List of endangered heritage of Hispania Nostra. Photo: Jsierro (CC BY-SA 3.0 es) What to see and do in Encío
