What to see and do in Bugedo

Bugedo
Village
Bugedo is a municipality of 193 inhabitants in the Valle del Ebro comarca, in the province of Burgos, 80 kilometres from the capital and between the contrast of the Montes Obarenes and the valley of the río Oroncillo, which opens out towards the plain of Miranda; its name comes from the Latin buxetum, place of box trees. In the gorge linking it to Foncea, the Battle of la Morcuera was fought in the year 865. The village preserves the monastery of Santa María de Bugedo, with a Romanesque church founded in 1165 by Lady Sancha de Frías and consecrated in 1236, as well as a 19th-century optical telegraph tower, number 33 on the Castile line. The festivities, in honour of Our Lady of the Assumption and Saint Roch, are held on 15 August.
Monastery of Santa María de Bugedo de Candepajares
Monument
Founded around 1162 by Doña Sancha Díaz de Frías and subject to the Premonstratensian abbey of Ibeas de Juarros; it preserves the chancel with three Romanesque apses of the late twelfth century and a handsome Classicist cloister.
Alfonso VIII visits the monastery of Bugedo
Historical milestone
In 1176 Alfonso VIII came to the monastery of Bugedo de Candepajares and granted it new benefits, a royal endorsement that explains the rapid growth of a foundation born barely fifteen years earlier.
Tower of telegrafía óptica de Bugedo
Monument
In the municipal district stands a nineteenth-century optical telegraph tower, number 33 on the Castile line; these watchtowers transmitted coded messages by means of signals visible from one to the next before the arrival of the electric telegraph.
Battle of la Morcuera
Historical milestone
The battle of la Morcuera was fought on 9 August in the year 865 in the gorge of the Hoz de la Morcuera, between Foncea and Bugedo, near Miranda de Ebro, when the Cordoban army of Mohamed I surprised the Christian troops of Ordoño I, defended by the Castilian count Rodrigo, and advanced plundering as far as Salinas de Añana. Rodrigo tried to cut off their retreat at Pancorbo, but they escaped through the basin of the Oja river. The defeat, one of the setbacks suffered by the early county of Castile against the Cordoban razzias advancing up the Ebro corridor, halted the resettlement of the Central Plateau, a task that would be continued by Ordoño's son, Alfonso III, and allowed Mohamed I to take advantage of the loss of the fortresses of Cerezo del Río Tirón, Ibrillos and Grañón to launch new attacks in 866 and 867.

Nature
Bugedo sits at 534 metres at the point where the limestone crests of the Montes Obarenes fall away onto the Oroncillo meadowland; its very name comes from the Latin buxetum, the box thickets that covered these slopes.
