What to see and do in Altable

Altable
Village
Altable is a village in the Valle del Ebro comarca, in the province of Burgos, with 44 inhabitants, set at 712 metres above sea level, with the Montes Obarenes closing the horizon to the north and the N-232 road crossing its territory. It was a crown town of the cuadrilla of Quintanilla de San García, one of the seven into which the merindad de Bureba was divided, with its own jurisdiction and a local magistrate; after the fall of the Ancien Régime it became a constitutional town council within the partido of Miranda de Ebro. Its maximum seasonal population can reach around a hundred inhabitants, well above the registered residents, and the municipality has recorded no outstanding municipal debt in recent years.
Church of San Sebastián de Altable
Monument
The parish church of this town of barely forty residents, described in the nineteenth century as a modest but well-built temple served by a chaplain and two beneficed clergy, right in the corridor between the Bureba and the Ebro.
Hermitage of Nuestra Señora del Campo de Altable
Monument
On leaving the village towards Pancorbo stands the hermitage of Nuestra Señora del Campo, which nineteenth-century gazetteers already described as handsome and which remains the gathering point for the neighbourhood's pilgrimage.
Riverside woods and elm groves of the Ea river
Nature
The river Ea marks the eastern limit of the municipal district at around 670 metres, among vegetable gardens, irrigated land and elm groves where the old gazetteers noted partridges, hares and rabbits at the foot of the Montes Obarenes.
