What to see and do in Bozoó

Bozoó
Village
Bozoó is a municipality of 101 inhabitants in the Valle del Ebro comarca, in the judicial district of Miranda de Ebro, which also brings together the settlements of Portilla and Villanueva Soportilla. Its church of San Julián y Santa Basilisa shows two construction phases: an initial Romanesque-Gothic body from the late 12th century, with a doorway with a polylobed arch and capitals with human figures, now very worn, a pointed barrel vault and a font from the same period; and a Renaissance chancel from the 16th century that doubled the height of the original nave, with a stone star-ribbed vault and a Baroque altarpiece in undyed walnut wood attributed to Domingo de Arana.
Church of San Julián y Santa Basilisa de Bozoó
Monument
It preserves a Romanesque doorway in the south wall with a multifoil arch and capitals carved with human figures and plant motifs; a sixteenth-century remodelling added star ribbed vaulting and a Baroque altarpiece attributed to Domingo de Arana.
Rogations of Nuestra Señora de Vardolles
Curiosity
The hermitage of San Sebastián, rebuilt in 1800, guarded the image of Nuestra Señora de Vardolles that the residents brought out in the May rogations to pray for the harvests, a farming custom deeply rooted in the valley.
Communal mountain of Sierra Besantes
Nature
Bozoó administers close to eight hundred and twenty hectares of common pasture on the Sierra Besantes hill, the basis of a livestock economy that for centuries sustained a town now reduced to a hundred residents.
Portilla and Villanueva Soportilla
Curiosity
The municipality of Bozoó, in the Burgos region of the Ebro valley, is completed by two minor local entities with almost twin names, Portilla and Villanueva Soportilla, settled at the foot of the slope leading into the valley and described in the 19th century as places battered by every wind. Villanueva-Soportilla lies about a hundred metres from the Ebro river, which there forms the border with the Álava town of Sobrón, and also borders Bachicabo, Puentelarrá, Guinicio and Santa Gadea del Cid; its church is dedicated to San Esteban Protomártir.
