What to see and do in Santa Gadea del Cid

Santa Gadea del Cid
Village
Santa Gadea del Cid is a walled town of around 180 inhabitants in the Valle del Ebro comarca, in Burgos, whose name recalls its patron saint, Saint Agatha. Already documented in 1008 as “Término”, on the boundary between the kingdoms of Castile and Navarre, it had a clearly defensive origin as an advanced stronghold of Castile; by 1012 the presence of Count Sancho García is already recorded. A historic-artistic ensemble since 1973, it preserves an 11th-century castle remodelled by the Manrique family and the Romanesque hermitage of las Eras. On its territory stands the monastery of El Espino, declared a monument in 1991.
Castle and keep of Santa Gadea del Cid
Monument
A fortress of eleventh-century origin rebuilt in the fifteenth by Pedro López de los Manrique; the keep survives, six metres to a side, with a round-arched door on the first floor and Gothic ribbed vaulting.
Puerta de la Villa and Arco de Abajo
Monument
Of the wall, today embedded in the houses, two medieval gates survive: the Puerta de la Villa, with a Gothic arch of 2.55 metres beside the site of the old jail, and the Arco de Abajo or de las Eras, of more massive construction.
Church of San Pedro de Santa Gadea del Cid
Monument
A Gothic church documented since 1012 whose battlemented tower betrays its defensive function; inside it preserves an altarpiece of 1555, the work of Juan Picardo and Lope de Rueda, alongside a small parish museum.
Monastery of Nuestra Señora del Espino
Monument
A medieval monastery in pure Gothic style, built almost entirely of ashlar, whose origin goes back to the apparition of the Virgin to two shepherds from Santa Gadea del Cid in the spring of 1399, at the spot where, according to tradition, many Christians had been martyred during the Muslim invasion. Under the Benedictine order a small hermitage was first built, which in the 15th century was transformed into the monastery, completed in 1443 and named Nuestra Señora del Espino after the bush beside which the Virgin appeared. It was declared a protected site on 31 October 1991; it stands on the outskirts of the town, at the foot of the cliffs of the Montes Obarenes.
GR-291 between the Obarenes and the Ebro
Activity
A long-distance footpath of some sixty kilometres linking the sierras of the natural park with the banks of the Ebro and passing through Santa Gadea, allowing the contrast between limestone moorland and river meadow to be walked on foot.
Hospital of San Lázaro of Santa Gadea del Cid
Curiosity
Founded in 1465 to care for the sick poor and for pilgrims, the town's old hospital was refurbished in 2010 and today operates as rural accommodation, preserving its fabric and its charitable memory.
Santa Águeda dinner of Santa Gadea del Cid
Food and drink
On 5 February the town celebrates Santa Águeda, from whom it takes its name, with a communal supper that brings the residents together in a village that barely exceeds a hundred inhabitants outside the summer.
