Saldaña de Burgos
Village
Saldaña de Burgos is a municipality of 203 inhabitants in the Alfoz de Burgos district, 10 km from the capital, on the Ruta de la Lana. It is made up of two settlements a kilometre and a half apart: the village itself, traditionally devoted to agriculture, and the Las Ventas quarter, which arose to serve travellers on the road and to make wooden carts. The earliest document mentioning the town dates from 1057, and in 1250 its residents, led by the mayors Ordoño and García, confronted the merino (royal official) of Burgos by refusing to pay a collective fine for a murder, a dispute they won before the tribunal assembled in the cathedral cloister. Its feast day is the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.
