Modúbar de la Emparedada
Village
Modúbar de la Emparedada is a municipality of the province of Burgos, in the Alfoz de Burgos comarca, fourteen kilometres from the capital, which also comprises the settlement of Cojóbar. It has 773 inhabitants, who live mainly off grain farming and a livestock feed factory in Cojóbar. It sits in the valley of the río de los Ausines, at 893 metres above sea level, among moorlands that culminate at Mount Altotero, where prehistoric archaeological remains have been found. Its name may come from the Arabic mudawwar, meaning round, or from a pre-Roman word; the surname Emparedada recalls, according to legend, a lady cured of the plague between the walls of the church. Its Renaissance church of the Assumption, attributed to Domingo de Aros in 1602, covers the chancel with star-ribbed vaults.
