Sarracín
Village
Sarracín is a municipality in the Alfoz de Burgos district, situated 11 kilometres from the capital, on the banks of the river de los Ausines, a tributary of the Arlanzón; it has 261 inhabitants. Linked to the Sarrazino family, the village is first mentioned on 23 January 963 in the Becerro de Cardeña, when Bishop Sarrazino and his deacon signed over to the monastery of San Pedro de Cardeña a small family monastery dedicated to Santa María. On the hillock overlooking the village there once stood a tower recorded in medieval documents as Castrillo de Sarracín. Within its territory, one kilometre from the village centre, stands the Renaissance palace of Saldañuela, from the 17th-18th centuries, declared a National Monument in 1931 and linked to Isabel de Osorio, a lady of the court of Philip II.
