Villayerno Morquillas
Village
Villayerno Morquillas is a municipality of the province of Burgos, in the Alfoz de Burgos comarca, located eight kilometres from the capital and watered by the Morquillas and Hurones rivers. It has 208 inhabitants. At the site of Cuesta el Lugar a Chalcolithic collective burial appeared, with pottery and flint arrowheads, and near Morquillas Roman pottery remains have been found beside the road that linked Astorga with Tarragona. Villayerno and Morquillas were two separate settlements, resettled from the 9th century onward; the first appears documented as early as the year 942 under the name Villa de Infernu, and the second, of Basque origin, as Murchelas in 1154. Both were united under their current joint name at the end of the 15th century.
