Alfoz de Quintanadueñas
Village
Alfoz de Quintanadueñas is a municipality in the comarca of Alfoz de Burgos, situated a league to the northwest of the provincial capital, on the right bank of the river Ubierna. It has 2,158 inhabitants, with its seat in Quintanadueñas and four hamlets: Arroyal, Marmellar de Arriba, Páramo del Arroyo and Villarmero, documented between the 10th and 13th centuries. The territory was recovered for Castile after the resettlement ordered by Alfonso III of Oviedo in 884. It is not known who founded Quintanadueñas, though it is thought to have arisen from the secularisation of a convent of nuns around the year 1000; in 1068 Sancho II of Castile granted the town to Bishop Simeón. Its church of the Rosario, built between 1598 and 1620, replaced an earlier Romanesque one, from which a splendid 12th-century Pantocrator is preserved.
