What to see and do in Retuerta

Retuerta
Village
Retuerta is a hamlet in the Arlanza comarca and the judicial district of Lerma, in the province of Burgos, bathed by the Arlanza river and bordering Covarrubias; it has 56 inhabitants (INE 2025), compared with the 284 it had in the mid-19th century. Its history is tied to Covarrubias: after the depopulation that followed the Arab invasion of the 8th century, the area was repopulated until, in 978, Garcí Fernández, son of Count Fernán González, founded the Infantado de Covarrubias, granting his daughter Urraca a lordship of which Retuerta formed part. At its entrance the village preserves a jurisdictional pillar (rollo), popular timber-framed architecture, the Herrerian-Neoclassical church of San Esteban and a 14th-century hermitage of Santa María. The Ruta de la Lana and the Camino del Cid pass through Retuerta.

Nature
Above the valley extend limestone páramos covered with Spanish juniper, a relic tree of the Tertiary able to bear extreme cold and drought on soils where hardly any other tree species prospers.
