Villafruela
Village
Villafruela is a town in the province of Burgos, in the Arlanza comarca, probably founded in the 10th century; an old text on the bishopric of Burgos already mentions it as razed by the Moors in the year 920. It belonged to the Monastery of San Pedro de Cardeña from 1077 and later to that of San Pelayo, which in 1428 sold it to the council (concejo) of Santa María del Campo. In 1520, during the Comuneros revolt, the bishop of Burgos, Juan Rodríguez de Fonseca, took refuge here fleeing Valladolid, before the village was sacked by the rebels. With 140 inhabitants, it preserves the Gothic church of San Lorenzo, the 17th-century archbishop's palace bearing the coat of arms of Juan Fernández de Isla, and the so-called Arco de Odón, a remnant of the old medieval wall.
