Fontioso
Village
Fontioso is a hamlet of 52 inhabitants in the Arlanza comarca, in Burgos, located 54 kilometres from the provincial capital, between the Esgueva and Arlanza rivers, at an altitude of 972 metres; the municipality also includes the Granja Guímara. Its name comes from the abundance of springs (fuentes) and bears (osos) that must have existed in the area in ancient times. It is first mentioned in a charter of 1032, by which Gontroda sold the town to Queen Urraca for four hundred silver sueldos, when it bordered Solarana, Rabé de los Escuderos and Cilleruelo de Arriba. It preserves the church of Santa Columba, with an altarpiece from 1638, and the manor house of the González de Vadiella family.
