What to see and do in Santa Cruz del Valle

Santa Cruz del Valle
Village
Santa Cruz del Valle is a settlement in the province of Ávila situated in the barranco de las Cinco Villas, at the foot of the sierra de Gredos, at 724 metres above sea level. Charles IV separated it from Mombeltrán with the privilege of town status on 24 December 1791, against the 456 inhabitants it had in the mid-19th century and the 295 of today. The stone rollo beside the hermitage of San José, built by a resident who was mayor of the town and dated 1876, recalls that independence; the Casa del Reloj, on the plaza de la Constitución, houses a museum of contemporary art. The village is completed by the parish church of la Santa Cruz, from the early 16th century. Its patronal festivals of the Santísimo Cristo Arrodillado are held from 5 to 10 August.

The auction of the litter-bars
Activity
During the festivities of the Exaltation of the Cross, from 13 to 17 September, the residents bid for the poles of the litter to carry the image on their shoulders; what is raised, along with the offerings, goes to the parish.
