Villarejo del Valle
Village
Villarejo del Valle is a village in the province of Ávila, in the comarca of the Tiétar valley, situated in the barranco de las Cinco Villas, on the southern slope of the sierra de Gredos, below the puerto del Pico, which, at 1395 metres, links the Alberche valley with that of the Tiétar. It belonged to the old comarca of the Ferrerías de Ávila until, in 1694, under the reign of Charles II, it obtained a town charter; in 1834 it was definitively incorporated into the judicial district of Arenas de San Pedro. Declared a Paisaje Pintoresco (a scenic-landscape protection category) in 1975, it preserves the Gothic-Isabelline church of San Bartolomé and a jurisdictional rollo with six drums topped with animal heads, protected since 1963. It now has about 304 inhabitants, against the 810 recorded by Pascual Madoz in the mid-19th century.
