What to see and do in La Adrada

La Adrada
Village
La Adrada is a town in the comarca of Arenas de San Pedro, in the south of the province of Ávila, situated at 634 metres above sea level in the eastern massif of the sierra de Gredos, in the Tiétar valley. Its origin is uncertain, although Roman remains have been found, such as the Mocha bridge over the Tiétar, and an earlier Celtic settlement is thought to have stood on the hill where the castle now stands. This castle, from the 14th century, belonged to Álvaro de Luna and today houses the historical interpretation centre of the Tiétar valley; the town also preserves a 16th-century church and holds a well-attended medieval market. It now has about 2,850 inhabitants.
Castle of la Adrada
Monument
La Adrada castle, in the Tiétar valley, has its origin in a 14th-century Gothic church built on a hill, which the constable Ruy López Dávalos, to whom Henry III of Castile had granted the town, fortified at the end of that century and turned into a palatial residence; the wall surrounding it dates from the 15th century. It later passed into the hands of Álvaro de Luna, under John II of Castile, and of Beltrán de la Cueva, under Henry IV; in the 17th century it belonged to the House of Montijo and in the 19th to the House of Alba. After a long period of decay, it was handed over to the Town Council of La Adrada, restored and refurbished, and today houses the historical interpretation centre of the Tiétar valley.
The medieval market of the castle
Activity
The villa, which received the privilege of Enrique III on 14 October 1393, re-enacts each year a medieval market around its castle which comes to double the population of the municipality for the days it lasts.
