What to see and do in Casillas

Casillas
Village
Casillas is a village in the province of Ávila, on the southern slope of the sierra de Gredos, at the start of the Tiétar valley, with 673 inhabitants, surrounded by a large forest of chestnut trees and oak woods near the river's source. Its history is bound up with La Adrada, within whose territory it was included when the latter was made a town on 14 October 1393, with jurisdictional and territorial ties between the two villages. In the mid-19th century it had 836 inhabitants, more than today. The main access road is the C-501 regional road, known as the Autovía de los Pantanos, which links Alcorcón with Plasencia via Arenas de San Pedro, the comarca's capital. Every autumn the chestnut harvest mobilises much of the population.
The chestnut grove of Casillas
Nature
Extensive chestnut and oak woods cover the slopes of the municipality, at the very head of the Tiétar and on the southern side of the foothills of Gredos. They still carry economic weight and are one of the best preserved woods of the valley.
The ethnographic museum of resin
Monument
The La Resina room brings together tools, pots and testimonies of the trade that for decades gave work to much of the local population, when the pine woods of the municipality were tapped each spring to extract the resin.
