What to see and do in Higuera de las Dueñas

Higuera de las Dueñas
Village
Higuera de las Dueñas is a village in the province of Ávila, south of the sierra de Gredos, in the upper Tiétar valley, with 250 inhabitants and situated at 634 metres above sea level, at the foot of the sierra de la Higuera; its name recalls the granting of the place to a monastic order during the Reconquista, when the diocese of Ávila advanced south of Gredos through this area. Its acidic soils are dominated by holm oak, with junipers and patches of Pyrenean oak. The municipal music band was born in 2008 out of a group of Holy Week drummers, when Diego Garrigo Prieto gave lessons to fifteen volunteers; the town council provided them with instruments in 2009, and since then it has taken part in the annual cycle of Holy Week, summer and Christmas concerts, as well as the patronal festivals.

Begun in the 15th century and finished in the 16th following Gothic parameters, it holds inside a 17th-century Baroque altarpiece. It is the most substantial building of a municipality that today does not reach three hundred inhabitants.
