What to see and do in Santa María del Tiétar

Santa María del Tiétar
Village
Santa María del Tiétar, formerly Escarabajosa, as recorded in the Libro de la Montería of Alfonso XI, is the first settlement in the province of Ávila and in the Tiétar valley when entering from Madrid via the M-501; it stands at 697 metres above sea level and 80 kilometres from Madrid, in a mild climate that has earned it the nickname the Andalusia of the Tiétar. It has 582 inhabitants. Its lands belonged to the royal domain of the Comunidad de Ávila until, in the 15th century, they passed to the jurisdiction of Escalona, whose lordship John II granted in 1423 to Álvaro de Luna; after his execution in 1453, Henry IV raised the estado of Escalona to a duchy in 1472 in favour of Juan Pacheco, Marquess of Villena. The Cañada Real Leonesa Oriental crosses its territory, which explains its old tradition of cattle and sheep farming.
