What to see and do in Carmena

Carmena
Village
Carmena is a municipality in the Torrijos comarca, in the province of Toledo, with 771 inhabitants (INE 2025), set on a hill. Its patroness, santa Justina, would have been a victim of the anti-Christian persecution of prefect Dacian, in the time of Diocletian. Linked to the Order of Calatrava in the 13th century, it later belonged to the duchy of Maqueda, until on 2 November 1629 Philip IV granted it the title of town with its own mayor. Its church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is a 16th-century Renaissance temple, with a single nave with a barrel vault and dome, in whose walls Roman funerary inscriptions were reused; it also preserves the Casa de los Quevedo, a 1538 mansion with Toledan masonry and tilework, and its Holy Week is declared Interés Turístico Regional (a regional tourist-interest distinction granted by the autonomous community).
Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Carmena
Monument
The parish church of Our Lady of the Assumption, in Carmena (Toledo), is a 16th-century Renaissance-style church, built on the remains of an old castle that may have formed part of the tower's base. It has a single nave divided into three bays, with barely developed transept arms, a flat east end with a rectangular crypt below, and is covered by a barrel vault with lunettes, while a dome on pendentives rises above the crossing. At the west end, the choir is raised on four large corbels. The tower, square in plan with brick decoration and an octagonal upper body, together with a baroque chapel with a hemispherical dome, complete the complex. On the north wall a Roman funerary slab is preserved, in capital letters, dated to around the 2nd century.
House of the Quevedo Family
Monument
Noble house dated 1538, rectangular in plan and two storeys high, built in Toledan masonry with tile decoration. On the ground floor four openings with wrought-iron grilles open onto the street, along with a large voussoired round-arched doorway, above which a tile marks the date of construction and the coat of arms of the Quevedo family. Inside, the entrance hall preserves another coat of arms and an 18th-century Marian image.
Holy Week of Carmena
Activity
Celebration declared of Regional Tourist Interest, with processions that make their way through the town's old streets.
