The Merger of Val de Santo Domingo and Caudilla Curiosity · Santo Domingo-Caudilla, Torrijos, Toledo The municipality of Santo Domingo-Caudilla was created in 1973 from the merger of Val de Santo Domingo and Caudilla. Val de Santo Domingo owes its name to its location in a valley and to an old hermitage consecrated to Santo Domingo de Silos. Caudilla, for its part, was resettled in the 12th century by old Castilians after the Reconquista; in the 15th century it hosted King Henry IV on his way to Toledo and took part in the defence of the district in 1477. Its name may come from the Latin cap-villa, head of town, alluding to its role as an administrative centre alongside the castle that stood there.
