What to see and do in Alcabón

Alcabón
Village
Alcabón is a municipality of Torrijos, in Toledo, with 792 inhabitants, on a plain between the rivers Tagus and Alberche, 36 km from the capital. Its name, Arabic, could mean "the small vault," and it is documented from 1095; in 1156 Alfonso VII granted the castle to Count Nuño Pérez de Lara. In 1179 Queen Leonor of England, wife of Alfonso VIII, donated the town to a chapel of santo Tomás de Canterbury in Toledo Cathedral, a domain that lasted until its sale in 1482 to Gutierre de Cárdenas, first duke of Maqueda. It suffered French plundering in the Peninsular War. It preserves a 16th-century olive press, one of the most complete of its kind, with elements that could be Andalusi, and the hermitage of the Virgen de la Aurora, local patroness, from 1606.

Monument

Her feast day is celebrated on 8 September, the date on which popular devotion to the image that gives the hermitage its name is concentrated.
Olive Oil Mill of Alcabón
Monument
16th-century oil mill considered one of the most complete and oldest surviving examples of its kind, with elements that may date back to Arab rule, between the 8th and 11th centuries. It now operates as the Museum of Oil and Wine, where visitors can see the mill's historic machinery and installations.
