What to see and do in Marrupe

Marrupe
Village
Marrupe is a municipality in the Sierra de San Vicente, in Toledo, with 166 inhabitants, set on mountainous ground and watered by the Marrupejo stream, a tributary of the Guadyerbas. Its place name, of uncertain origin, has been derived both from Arabic and from the Latin MARRVBIVM, or from a pre-Roman root joined to the Latin term for rock, a hypothesis supported by the hills of the surrounding area. It is first documented on 7 January 1268, when Alfonso X granted these lands to the bishop of Cuenca; in 1285 it passed to Juan García de Toledo, and in time became part of the marquisate of Montesclaros, with its seat at the castle of Bayuela. It preserves the parish church of San Bartolomé, its patron saint, next to the hermitage of San Juan, and celebrates San Sebastián on 20 January and San Bartolomé on 24 August.
