What to see and do in Hinojosa de San Vicente

Hinojosa de San Vicente
Village
Municipality of the comarca of Sierra de San Vicente, in the province of Toledo, founded in 1522 on the site of the San Vicente hill and separated from Castillo de Bayuela in 1632, when Philip IV granted it the title of town; on top of the hill are preserved the ruins of a fortress raised between the eighth and eleventh centuries, and its district reaches the range of El Piélago, the highest area of the comarca, which rises above 1,200 metres; its workshops make chorizo, salchichón and loin cured in the dry air of the mountain slope.
Ruins of the castle of San Vicente
Monument
Remains of a fortress built between the 8th and 11th centuries on the hill of San Vicente and later reused as a Christian stronghold, with traces of two towers.
Convent of el Piélago
Monument
The Convento del Piélago, now in ruins, is located in the Sierra de San Vicente, in the municipal area of Hinojosa de San Vicente (Toledo). Founded in 1687, it belonged to the order of the Discalced Carmelites and existed as such until the First Carlist War, during which it was left in ruins; it is described in Pascual Madoz's Diccionario geográfico-estadístico-histórico de España. Today it is the destination of local pilgrimages and is used for retreats, next to the El Piélago area, near the peak of the same name.
Mountain range of El Piélago
Nature
The highest area of the Sierra de San Vicente, formed by the peaks of Cruces (1,373 metres), San Vicente (1,320 metres) and Pelados (1,331 metres), which rise above 1,200 metres and offer wide views over the Tagus valley and the Montes de Toledo. Hinojosa de San Vicente sits at the foot of this mountain group.
Church of la Concepción de Hinojosa
Monument
A late Gothic-Renaissance church from the 16th century located in Hinojosa de San Vicente (Toledo), with a single nave, a star-ribbed vault divided into five bays and a bell tower, to which several adjoining chapels were later added. The altar retable, from the first half of the 17th century, is Baroque in style and shows features of the Escorial school.
The founding of Hinojosa in 1522
Historical milestone
The town was founded in 1522 at the site of the Cerro de San Vicente, on land until then used for grazing. The name comes from hinojal, the place where fennel abounds, a plant common on the slopes of the district.
The separation from Castillo de Bayuela
Historical milestone
In 1632, a little over a century after its founding, Hinojosa obtained from Felipe IV the title of villa and separated from Castillo de Bayuela, on whose alfoz it depended. In the mid-nineteenth century it came to exceed a thousand households.
The cave of the holy martyrs
Nature
Tradition places in a cave of this range the refuge of the siblings Vincent, Sabina and Christeta during Diocletian's persecution, at the beginning of the 4th century, before they set out for Ávila, where they were martyred. From them the whole comarca took its name.
The cured-meat industry of Hinojosa
Food and drink
The dry, cold climate of the slope of the Cerro de San Vicente favours slow curing, and the town's workshops make chorizo, salchichón and cured loin with meat from the comarca. It is one of the recognised cured-meat centres of the sierra.
