What to see and do in Garciotum

Garciotum
Village
Garciotum is a municipality in the Sierra de San Vicente, in the province of Toledo, set on a south-facing hillside, with 220 inhabitants (INE 2025). It arose as a resettlement hamlet founded by Garçi Fortún, from whom it takes its name, and is first mentioned in 1250. Together with Hinojosa, El Real, Nuño Gómez and Marrupe, it belonged to the lordship of Castillo de Bayuela, and passed through the hands of the constable Álvaro de Luna, the Mendoza family, the Portocarrero family and the dukes of Híjar, until Philip IV granted it independence and the title of town in 1663, when the gallows and the pillory were erected in the main square. It preserves the parish church of Santa María Magdalena, Gothic-Renaissance, from the late 15th century, and a stone bridge of 1607 over the Saucedoso stream.
Church of Santa María Magdalena de Garciotum
Monument
The church of Santa María Magdalena, in Garciotum, in the Toledo district of the Sierra de San Vicente, is a Gothic-Renaissance church built in the late 15th century, with a single nave and a semicircular apse. It is built of rubble masonry, except for the tower, a 17th-century work in ashlar and brick. The interior capitals show plant, human-figure and animal iconography, and the portal, from the time of the Catholic Monarchs, combines a round-arched entrance framed by an alfiz with plant-motif decoration typical of the Gothic-Renaissance style of the period.

It is built of dressed stone, with a single round arch, and retains its parapet and original roadway.
