What to see and do in Sonseca

Sonseca
Village
Municipality of the comarca of Montes de Toledo, in the province of Toledo, which bought in 1629 the title of town to detach itself from the jurisdiction of the city of Toledo, sold its lordship in 1640 to the Portuguese financier Duarte Fernández Acosta and annexed Casalgordo as a hamlet in 1853; it preserves the remains of the Roman dam of Vallehermoso, culminates in El Berrocal, a granite spot of 895 metres, and from the 1950s it developed a powerful furniture industry.
The marzipan of Sonseca
Curiosity
Sonseca is one of Spain's major centres of marzipan and turrón making, with workshops that multiply their output during the Christmas season. The first marzipan workshops were set up in the municipality during the 19th century, and the confectionery industry has come to generate up to 10,000 jobs in peak season, together with turrón production.
The furniture industry of Sonseca
Curiosity
From the 1950s onwards the municipality developed a powerful furniture industry which, along with textiles and confectionery, explains its growth into one of the most populous towns in the province.
Church of San Juan Evangelista de Sonseca
Monument
Parish church dedicated to the town's patron saint, the main religious building in the town centre.
Roman Dam of Vallehermoso
Monument
The Roman dam of Vallehermoso, in the municipal district of Sonseca (Toledo), was built between the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD over the stream of the same name to hold back seasonal waters before they seeped into the lowlands, and continued to serve the Hispano-Visigothic communities after the fall of the Empire and, later, the Muslim settlements of La Mezquitilla and La Tejera. It is a gravity wall of trapezoidal cross-section, in Roman concrete faced with ashlar, which still preserves 98.20 metres in length, 1.85 metres in width at the crest and up to 3 metres in height, reinforced by buttresses and a downstream embankment. Over time it was left almost buried under sediment, until in 1983 municipal works damaged several sections of the original wall.
The Berrocal of Sonseca
Nature
Granite landscape reaching 895 metres, the highest point in the municipal district, with the boulders and scree typical of the foothills of the Montes de Toledo.
The town charter of Sonseca
Historical milestone
Sonseca obtained the title of villa in 1629 and with it detached itself from the jurisdiction of the city of Toledo, on which it had depended as a village. The purchase of the privilege was paid for by the residents themselves through a levy.
The lordship of Duarte Fernández Acosta
Historical milestone
In 1640 the residents sold the seigneury of the town to the Portuguese man of business Duarte Fernández Acosta, one of the Crown's financiers. Thus was born the seigneury of Sonseca, which lasted until the abolition of the seigneurial jurisdictions.
The annexation of Casalgordo
Historical milestone
Casalgordo was an independent municipality until 1853, when it was incorporated into Sonseca as an outlying village. It preserves its own church and its patron saint festivity, a little over three kilometres from the main town centre.
