What to see and do in Nambroca

Nambroca
Village
Nambroca, in the Montes de Toledo, has 5,263 inhabitants (2025); to the south of its urban centre rises the sierra de Nambroca, with the Cerro Marica (944 m), the Cerro Gordo (838 m) and the peak of la Oliva (900 m) covered in holm-oak woodland and Mediterranean scrub. Its name, already documented in the 12th century as Nonnoco, may derive from a pre-Roman personal name, probably Basque, of the owner or resettler of the place; in 1146 Alfonso VII mentions it when granting Pedro Gilbert a nearby depopulated hamlet. During the Civil War, Republican forces were stationed on its sierra until the end of the conflict. Its main historic building is the hermitage of the Santísimo Cristo de las Aguas, from the 17th century, an image to which residents entrusted themselves to ask for rain and the centre of the main local festivity.

Mountain range of Nambroca
Nature
A mountain range belonging to the Montes de Toledo that runs from east to west south of the town of Nambroca, between the municipalities of Nambroca, Chueca and Burguillos de Toledo. Its notable peaks include cerro Marica, the highest at 944 metres, Cerro Gordo and pico de la Oliva, covered with holm oak, cork oak, Portuguese oak and pine woods, with rockrose, rosemary and thyme in the scrubland. Its rocks, granites and gneisses with quartzite ridges from the lower Palaeozoic, were folded during the Hercynian orogeny, between 390 and 310 million years ago. Its fauna includes wild boar, foxes, hares and rabbits, and occasionally the Spanish imperial eagle and griffon vulture. The range appears in a local weather saying: "If the sierra de Layos puts on its headscarf, go to Nambroca."
