Roman Dam of Vallehermoso Monument · Sonseca, Montes de Toledo, Toledo The Roman dam of Vallehermoso, in the municipal district of Sonseca (Toledo), was built between the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD over the stream of the same name to hold back seasonal waters before they seeped into the lowlands, and continued to serve the Hispano-Visigothic communities after the fall of the Empire and, later, the Muslim settlements of La Mezquitilla and La Tejera. It is a gravity wall of trapezoidal cross-section, in Roman concrete faced with ashlar, which still preserves 98.20 metres in length, 1.85 metres in width at the crest and up to 3 metres in height, reinforced by buttresses and a downstream embankment. Over time it was left almost buried under sediment, until in 1983 municipal works damaged several sections of the original wall. Photo: Julia Torija (CC0) What to see and do in Sonseca
