What to see and do in Mazarambroz

Mazarambroz
Village
Mazarambroz is a municipality in the comarca of Montes de Toledo, in the province of Toledo, with 1251 inhabitants (INE 2025), whose name derives from the Arabic manzil 'Amrus, 'lodging place of Amrús'. It was the old Roman city of Monterrosas, in Tarraconensis, and preserves the remains of the Roman dam of Alcantarilla, possibly from the 1st century and built to supply Toledo with water, one of the most notable Roman hydraulic works in the province. First mentioned as Manzel Amrus in a document from 1238, at the end of the 14th century the watchtower known as El Castillo was built to defend the Christian resettlement. In its territory stretches the dehesa of the Castañar, a pastureland estate of holm oaks and Portuguese oaks with a palace from the early 20th century and the ruins of an old convent.
Roman Dam of Alcantarilla
Monument
Remains of a great Roman dam, possibly from the 1st century, built to supply water to the city of Toledo. It is one of the most remarkable Roman waterworks in the province.
Convent of el Castañar
Monument
Ruins of a former Franciscan convent dedicated to Nuestra Señora del Castañar, in the site of the same name, which over its history received illustrious visits such as those of Cardinal Cisneros and Queen Elisabeth of Valois. The house was abandoned after the 19th-century disentailments, which stripped the Church of much of its property, and has remained in ruins ever since.
Dehesa del Castañar
Nature
The dehesa del Castañar, on the foothills of the Montes de Toledo within the municipality of Mazarambroz, covers 142.43 km², almost two-thirds of the municipal area, and is home to endangered species such as the Spanish imperial eagle and the Iberian lynx. To the south rises the sierra del Castañar, with the Pico Amor, at 1380 metres the third-highest peak in the province of Toledo, among other summits. Almost its entire area is covered in forest, the last remnant of the woodland that once covered the whole district. Already mentioned in Alfonso XI's Libro de la Montería as a mountain of bear and wild boar, it belonged to the Order of the Temple until its dissolution in 1309 and was jointly exploited by fourteen municipalities grouped in the Brotherhood of San Martín de la Montiña.
Palace of El Castañar
Monument
The palace of El Castañar stands at the centre of the estate of the same name, in Mazarambroz (Montes de Toledo, Toledo), a seigneurial residence linked to the hunting and farming use of the dehesa. It was built in the early 20th century, between 1904 and 1909, to a design by Joaquín Saldaña y López, inspired by Walter Scott's Scottish Abbotsford House, in an eclectic, historicist three-storey style, with regular ashlar, very steep slate roofs and turrets topped with merlons. It has two gardens, French and Italian, and a 19th-century historicist chapel. Today it is the private property of the Count of Mayalde and Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection). The estate, with 6,800 hectares of holm oak woodland, maintains vineyards, olive groves and Iberian pig farming, and is a big-game hunting reserve where Juan Carlos I shot his first wild boar in 1949.
