What to see and do in Layos

Layos
Village
Layos is a municipality of 931 inhabitants in the Montes de Toledo, flat, with an average altitude of 651 metres. Already documented in 1278 within La Sisla, it belonged to Toledo until 1445, when John II gave it to Juan Carrillo de Toledo, adelantado of Cazorla, and it later passed to the López de Ayala family, counts of Fuensalida; in 1509 it was acquired by Francisco de Rojas, who made it a manorial town before it passed to the counts of Teba and Mora. It is dominated by the fortified palace of the Counts of Mora, from the 15th century and declared a site of cultural interest, next to the church of Santa María Magdalena. At the El Vizcaíno site it also preserves the remains of a Roman mausoleum, protected since 2007.
Palace of los Condes de Mora
Monument
Fortified palace in Layos (Toledo), also known as the Palace of the Counts of Mora, dating from the late 14th and early 15th centuries, though with successive renovations: the Mudéjar interior is from the 16th century, and much of the outer enclosure from the 17th. Made up of the palace, a garden and service quarters within a walled precinct, it is a square building with towers at the corners, one of them circular, and preserves from its original fabric the stone doorway and a mullioned window with twin arches and interlaced strapwork. It belonged to the adelantados of Cazorla, passed to the counts of Fuensalida and, from 1509, to the counts of Mora, among whose residents was Empress Eugénie de Montijo. Declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1991.
Roman Mausoleum of Layos
Monument
The site of El Vizcaíno extends on both sides of the Camino de Ajofrín, on the right bank of the Guajaraz stream, next to one of the branches of the road that linked Toletum with Emerita Augusta, only two leagues from Toledo. It contains the remains of a necropolis with common ware and Hispanic sigillata pottery - among them a fragment showing a warrior armed with a shield and spear -, coins and bronze and iron objects. In the El Castillejo area, a mausoleum or family tomb stands partially preserved, up to two metres high, already noted in the 17th and 18th centuries, from which several decorated Palaeochristian sarcophagi came, today divided between the Royal Academy of History and the Frederic Marès Museum in Barcelona. It was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 2007.
