What to see and do in Guadamur

Guadamur
Village
Municipality of the comarca of Montes de Toledo, in the province of Toledo, known for the treasure of Guarrazar, a group of Visigothic votive crowns and crosses of gold discovered in 1858 in a spot in its district that is today one of the most significant Visigothic sites in Spain; it is presided over by the castle raised around 1468 by Pedro López de Ayala, count of Fuensalida, and it preserves the Mudéjar chapel of Nuestra Señora de la Natividad, of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, and an ethnographic museum housed in the chapel of San Antón.
Castle of Guadamur
Monument
A seigneurial castle built around 1468 by Pedro López de Ayala, count of Fuensalida. It preserves its keep and a crenellated outer wall, and even served as a prison of the Inquisition in 1590. It was built in two phases, around 1470 and around 1520, on the Cerro de la Ermita hill, east of the town. It belonged to the Ayala family until the 17th century, when it passed to the House of Velasco, and in the 18th century the title and the property passed to the House of Escalona. It retained its military character until the 18th century, when the counts moved to their Toledo palace next to the church of Santo Tomé, although it also served as a hunting residence and a safe refuge near Toledo in times of political unrest. In 1880 three residents of Guadamur bought it to shelter the poor and needy.
The Treasure of Guarrazar
Curiosity
The Treasure of Guarrazar is a collection of Visigothic goldsmith's work, crowns and votive crosses that several kings of the Visigothic kingdom of Toledo offered as ex-votos. It was discovered between 1858 and 1861 at the site of the Guarrazar orchard, in Guadamur, when torrential rains caused the collapse of the ground where the church of the monastery of Santa María de Sorbaces had stood. The most valuable pieces are the votive crowns of kings Recceswinth and Suinthila, the latter stolen in 1921 and never recovered; both made of gold, set with pearls and cabochon-cut sapphires. Hanging from Recceswinth's crown are letters of gold and garnet that spell out the legend Reccesvintus rex offeret. Today the pieces are divided between Paris and Madrid.
Archaeological Site of Guarrazar
Nature
The site where the Visigothic treasure appeared, with the remains of a religious building and a late antique necropolis. It is one of the most important Visigothic sites in Spain.
Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de la Natividad de Guadamur
Monument
The hermitage of Our Lady of the Nativity stands on the hill bearing its name, in Guadamur, overlooking the town from the east and very close to the castle. It is in an early Mudéjar style, from the 13th and 14th centuries, and of its original design only the semicircular apse survives, built of rubble masonry with brick corners and a pair of blind concentric arches, along with a brick dome attached to the nave's triumphal arch; the rest was rebuilt in 1976. On the altar is venerated a painting whose origin was a Byzantine icon of Saint Anne holding the infant Virgin in her arms, transformed by successive restorations, which has been documented in worship since 1611. Beneath the apse ceiling hang reproductions of the Visigothic crowns from the Treasure of Guarrazar, found precisely in Guadamur in 1858.
Museum of Artes y Costumbres Populares de los Montes de Toledo
Monument
Ethnographic museum housed in the 16th-century hermitage of San Antón. It brings together tools, dress and utensils from the traditional life of the comarca.
Visigothic Days of Guadamur
Activity
Historical re-enactment that fills the village with a market, craft workshops and theatrical performances inspired by the Visigothic period and the Guarrazar find.
