Castle of Guadamur Monument · Guadamur, Montes de Toledo, Toledo A seigneurial castle built around 1468 by Pedro López de Ayala, count of Fuensalida. It preserves its keep and a crenellated outer wall, and even served as a prison of the Inquisition in 1590. It was built in two phases, around 1470 and around 1520, on the Cerro de la Ermita hill, east of the town. It belonged to the Ayala family until the 17th century, when it passed to the House of Velasco, and in the 18th century the title and the property passed to the House of Escalona. It retained its military character until the 18th century, when the counts moved to their Toledo palace next to the church of Santo Tomé, although it also served as a hunting residence and a safe refuge near Toledo in times of political unrest. In 1880 three residents of Guadamur bought it to shelter the poor and needy. Photo: Pedro Antonio Alonso (CC BY-SA 3.0 es) What to see and do in Guadamur
