What to see and do in Albarreal de Tajo

Albarreal de Tajo
Village
Municipality of the comarca of Torrijos, in the province of Toledo, whose name evolved from the Arabic Albalat, the road, and which Alfonso VI granted in 1095 to the Cistercian monastery of San Servando; in its district is preserved the Islamic fortress of Calaña, of the eleventh century, which controlled a strategic point of the Tagus valley, and its church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is a sixteenth-century Gothic hall church with a coffered ceiling and a characteristic side bellcote.
Fortress of Calaña
Monument
11th-century Islamic fortification also known as the Cueva del Moro, in Albarreal de Tajo (Toledo), which controlled access to Toledo and formed part of the defensive system of the Tagus valley. It is now in a ruinous state, though remains of Islamic pottery and of the castle itself attest to its historical importance; it is included in the Lista Roja del Patrimonio (a Spanish register of heritage at risk) due to its state of conservation.
Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Albarreal
Monument
The church of Our Lady of the Assumption in Albarreal de Tajo, a town in the Torrijos district of Toledo, is a Gothic hall-church with a single nave, built in the 16th century using Toledan brick-and-stone masonry (aparejo toledano). The square-plan main chapel opens onto the nave through a triumphal arch, and a side chapel with a latticework screen is reached through a round arch. The nave is covered by a par-y-nudillo timber ceiling with double hip-rafters and ties, and outside, a side entrance porch and a two-bay bell-gable crowned with a semicircular pediment stand out.
From Albalat to Alba Real
Curiosity
The name evolved from the Arabic Albalat, the road, to the Alba Real documented in the 17th century. In 1095 Alfonso VI granted the town to the Cistercian monastery of San Servando.
Fisherman's stew
Food and drink
Carp and barbel from the river cooked with the river water itself, garlic, paprika and bread, in a stew that the fishermen managed at the water's edge. It is the characteristic river dish of the Tajo riverside towns in this comarca.
